First, there are the publishers and reviewers. In the case of an academically-orientated book, these reviewers are often practising academics or lecturers. In the light of my 25 years as a management lecturer, this presents a particularly difficult hurdle to overcome. The vast majority of lecturers look for textbooks that can be used by their students to support and supplement their course materials. The more closely such books conform to their existing teaching syllabuses, the easier it is for them to be used, recommended, and taught. In some cases a single text book may be adequate for a whole course, and be used for many years. However, a book that is radically different from existing syllabuses requires a certain amount of additional effort on the part of the lecturer.
