Penknife Press Short Story Writing Contest

Open to stories of 1,000 to 5,000 words

First prize $1,000

Closing date 20 September 2006

The winning story and runners-up will be published in a short story collection.

Is the written word dead? The rapid growth of blogging would seem to demonstrate that there is both a supply and demand for understanding contemporary society through the written word.

But what about short fiction? Fifty years ago there were many commercially successful journals publishing short fiction. Now it seems to be an art form on economic life support.

Penknife Press believes that short fiction will make a comeback. But it will be fiction that examines themes important to people debating the meaning of modern society. How could there be an explosion of people reading the writings of their fellow citizens on blogs, and not even be a slight increase in audiences for short stories? Are the contemporary equivalents of Ernest Hemingway, Kurt Vonnegut, James Baldwin and Truman Capote now writing blogs? We would like to hear from them.

Penknife Press is announcing its first annual Short Story Writing Contest. From the entries received, we will be creating an anthology of contemporary short stories that say something insightful about contemporary society. Compelling characters wanted, but compelling situations are required.
