With the merger of Penguin and Random House, big just got bigger, and there were self-evident reasons to do it. At the other end of the scale, small is still beautiful. In fact, the smaller the better. Niche publishing has never been so successful now that direct connections can be made with customers and readers. Even smaller, the self-publishers catch the eye of the iconoclasts, technos and legacy bashers. So what about the poor old middle, where most of us live?
