Eligibility: open to unpublished writers over 18 who are Commonwealth citizens.
Awarded for the best piece of unpublished short fiction (2,000–5,000 words). Submissions must be made by the author of the short story.
The prize covers the Commonwealth regions of 1. Africa, 2. Asia, 3. Canada and Europe, 4. Caribbean and 5. Pacific.
A distinguished panel of judges is chaired by Bernardine Evaristo.

The Commonwealth Foundation has also restructured its Writers' Prize, which is only open to published writers. The £10,000 prize for the best book by an established author disappears, and the first book prize is upgraded from £5,000 to £10,000, becoming simply the Commonwealth Book Prize.
