The Crime Vault

30 July 2012

The Little Brown UK paperback imprint Sphere has announced that it is setting up an online hub for crime, thriller and mystery e-books, commissioning new content as well as acquiring titles which have not previously been available in the UK, with the aim of becoming a "powerful marketing platform for digital-first titles".

Even so, many crime writers and readers will be glad to hear that there is to be another place where they can find crime books – especially a wide range of those which might not have been available previously.

It will be called 'The Crime Vault' and will offer hundreds of titles from across the Little Brown Group and from international authors, but its special focus will be on titles not currently available in the UK. Perhaps surprisingly, The Crime Vault is not intending to sell books, but to refer possible purchasers on to purchase online from the retailer of their choice.

It’s easy to see why crime has been the genre of choice. Enduringly popular, it is also the most international of genres, with large numbers of readers in the UK, US and in many other countries as well. Little, Brown associate publisher Daniel Mallory described the site as "a custom-designed showcase for an array of titles available nowhere else in the UK" and said the approach was well-suited to crime, calling it the "most reliably and enduringly popular genre at booksellers tills", adding that "crime readers are a very more-ish lot".

Titles specially acquired or commissioned for The Crime Vault will be priced at £2.99, as will certain backlist titles. The bestselling titles will move into print after their initial digital publication.
