Translated fiction

Recent controversies have brought an unusual amount of light-as well as heat-to the obscure field of literary translation. The most contentious episode occurred in 2021, when Amanda Gorman's poem for the presidential inauguration, The Hill We Climb, set off a search for translators whose race and gender were thought to match the identity of the Black US poet.

What's new in the translation sector? What have we achieved, apart, together? As I think about this, I am sitting in the back of Conway Hall in London, at English PENSupported by eminent writers, this is the English branch of International Pen, which has centres in nearly 100 countries. It fights for freedom of expression and against political censorship.
