International paper sizes (ISO216)

International paper sizes are in three series, called An, Bn, and Cn.

Increasing the number n by 1 halves the area of the sheet.

A The basic sheet A0 has an area of 1 square meter.

So an A5 sheet is an A4 sheet cut in half.
The ratio between the height and width of a sheet is always the square root of 2 or 1.414.
So an A4 sheet is 1/16 square meter and the width to height ration is 1:1.414.

B This series is derived from the A series. The area of a Bn sheet is the area of the An sheet multiplied by the square root of 2.

C Intended envelopes as an An sheet fits nicely, unfolded, in a Cn envelope. This is because the Cn size has an area of the fourth root of 2 or 1.189.

The use of the mathematical rations means that sheets can be cut and folded to transform them to another size.
