These images were taken in 2010 at the FRANKFURT BOOK FAIR

OCE and Cannon set up some of their machines at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2010.

The paper starts on a roll!

Digital files are fed into the printer. The pre-media work has to arranging the pages in the right order.

And the accuracy and alignment permits both sides to be printed simultaneously.

But the dimensions of the paper have to be very stable and consistent: So this machine takes the output and ensures that the humidity is right. Paper is very absorbent and the heat during the printing process drives the water out of the fibre fabric of the paper. This machines restores the humidity if necessary.

Because print machines and the collate and slice machines work at separate speeds, they need a buffer between them. The paper is threaded through the spools which move up or down to take up any slack.
The next machine will collate, slice and stack the pages for a book.

Full-colour covers printed to meet up with the book block in this machine. The process is not completely automated here: The books are fed in on the left where the spine is prepared for the glue before the cover is attached.
