EBook Cover

The ebook cover design needs to be rethought.

The specification for ebooks still has the cover. What is it for?

A cover used to serve the purpose of making it stand out or in some other way eye-catching. But with an ebook it is much more of a small icon.

Formatting

Get cover into the required format – This is a big topic. Most people are using a small version of their print file cover. However many of these miniaturised, print covers are illegible as an icon.  A nice wrap-around cover image will be truncated so this is an area for some new design work.

The cover image should be JPG, PNG, .TIF or GIF, about 600 pixels wide x 800 pixels high as the default size.The resolution only needs to be 72 dpi for optimal viewing on the web and ereaders. This image will be used on the product detail page - This is not the one integrated into the book file you upload.

What about the blurb

The ‘blurb’ that went on the back cover is ‘lost’ in the ebook format since there is no provision for a back cover. The cover text can live on as part of the meta data.
