Mentoring by a poet-mentor

Deadline: 22 November

Funded by Arts Council England. Patron: Carol Ann Duffy.

A national development programme for advanced Black and Asian poets.

Are you a Black or Asian poet at the stage where you are committed to producing a full-length collection? Would you benefit from a tailored programme of support and career development? If you think you fit this description, then The Complete Works II could be what you need to take your poetry to the next level.

For one year you will have an individually assigned poet-mentor offering you intensive critical feedback on your writing. You will also have access to a professional development programme including seven full days of seminars, critical reading sessions and a week-long Arvon residential, as well as career support and advice. You will have access to salon type events with guests who are international level artists in other fields- dance, design, music. You will take part in an exciting online workshop space with international links.

You will also be assigned a 'buddy' from the pool of The Complete Works I to offer significant peer support and additional mentoring. Alumni from The Complete Worls I include: Malika Booker, Roger Robinson, Denise Saul and Seni Seneviratne. The Complete Works II will culminate in a final anthology (Bloodaxe) and showcase events.

The Complete Works II welcomes applications from poets of all ages and we are particularly keen for young poets (defined as age 21-30) to apply. There are ten places on the scheme. Interviews will be held in January 2013 and you will need to be available from February 2013 to March 2014 as well as taking part in a showcase in September 2014.

The Complete Works II is highly subsidized, but there is a fee of £750 which is payable over two years of the programme. Writers on low incomes can also apply for one of either the two full bursaries or the two half bursaries.

To apply, send 5 copies of fifteen poems along with a covering letter outlining why you would like to join the programme. Your letter should state how you might benefit from it at this particular stage in your writing career and the contribution you can make.
