Old Possum's Children's Poetry Competition

Eligible age groups: 7-8 and 9-11

Closing date 20 October 2008

The Children’s Poetry Bookshelf is asking children aged 7-11 years to write a poem on the theme of ‘Work’, linking with the theme of the UK's National Poetry Day 2008

Cash prizes and books will be presented to the winners, with memberships of the Children's Poetry Bookshelf for their schools.

Poems must be no longer than 25 lines.

Submissions will be free, and can be emailed  or sent by post.

Send submissions with an entry form, which can be downloaded from the site to:

Old Possum’s Children’s Poetry Competition
P.O. Box 24
Winkleigh
EX19 8WU

Individual children can email their poems directly, with their parents' consent.

Teachers can download materials from the website to help their students write poems suitable for competition entry, and there are also tips for children working on their own.

The winners will be announced at a presentation in London in December.

The winning poems will be published on the Children’s Poetry Bookshelf website and in a booklet, copies of which will be sent to all the winners.

This year sees the introduction of a new International Learners category specifically for children based outside the UK who are learning English as a foreign or second language, run in partnership with the British Council.
