Bridport Prize 2007
Calling itself the ‘richest open writing prize in the English language’, this is now seeking entries for its 2007 competition. The Bridport Prize is open to writers of both poetry and short stories from all over the world, and carries a first prize of £5,000 in each category. The closing date for entries is 30 June 2007. Short stories should be a maximum of 5,000 words and poems a maximum of 42 lines, and the entry fee is £6 per submission. There is no age limit (the competition is for adults) and the subject matter is entirely open. The winning stories and shortlist will all be read by leading London literary agents, and the top 13 stories will also be submitted to the National Short Story Prize, which is worth £15,000. The top 26 stories will be published in the Bridport Prize 2007 anthology. The best 4 poetry entries will be submitted to the Forward Prize. The competition will be judged by Tracy Chevalier (stories) and Don Paterson (poetry.) The website has some interesting notes from the judges on what they are looking for. The Bridport Prize is reckoned to be a good place to kick-start your writing career and previous winners have included Kate Atkinson, Helen Dunmore and Tobias Hill.
