Children's writers' competition and publishing opportunity

The Wow Factor

Waterstone’s and Faber and Faber have launched a UK-wide writing competition for a children’s book. The promotion is open to anyone over the age of 16 years. First prize is a guaranteed publishing contract with Faber.

The winning book will be published in paperback in September 2006 and sold in every Waterstone’s branch. The book will be supported by a high-profile promotional campaign.

You can get an entry form from any branch of Waterstone’s. The winner will receive £1,000, against the usual royalties. Writers are asked to take the first three chapters and a synopsis of their novel, aimed at eight to twelve-year-olds or teens, to their nearest Waterstone’s between July 15 and 31.

A full manuscript must be available by September 30.

Branch staff and specialists from Waterstone’s Children’s Forum will filter entries, through reading groups, before they are sent for final judging.

'We are asking people from all walks of life to come forward. If someone has that magic combination - exciting writing with a gripping story line - then they have what it takes to be a successful children's writer. The opportunity is there for anyone who has the confidence and imagination to go for it.'

George Grey, Head Children's Buyer at Waterstone's.
