Looking for Writers

NEW WRITING 14

The British Council is now seeking submissions for their new writing anthology. New Writing is an annual showcase of work by both emerging and established authors from the UK and Commonwealth. Each volume introduces some of the best new writing in prose, poetry, fiction and non-fiction to wide audiences in the UK and overseas. New Writing's roll of honour includes Malcolm Bradbury, A. S. Byatt, Doris Lessing and Ben Okri. What's more, New Writing remains one of the few opportunities in the UK for unknown writers to be published by leading fiction publishers.

The British Council is now accepting submissions for New Writing 14, to be edited by Lavinia Greenlaw and Helon Habila. Writers from, or resident in, the UK and the Commonwealth are encouraged to submit short stories, poetry, literary essays, memoirs, biography and fiction. This could be an extract from a work in progress. The deadline for submissions is 30 June 2005.

The work must be unpublished and not be due for publication until at the earliest January 2007, and the author should be willing to give the British Council non-exclusive electronic rights for two years following publication, plus translation rights and other sub-rights to be confirmed. There is no limit on the length of pieces, but constraints of space mean that longer items will stand less chance of acceptance.

Submissions should be sent in triplicate, clearly typed, double-spaced, page numbered and with a name and address on each piece to: New Writing Film and Literature Department, British Council, 10 Spring Gardens, London SW1A 2BN

Submissions from outside the UK can be submitted by email to Chris Bartram at Chris.Bartram@britishcouncil.org  New Writing 14 will be published by Granta in September 2006. For more information on the anthology series, please visit our website at:
