The company you keep
The newsletter is one of the fixtures of the
writing world. It is approaching its 8th birthday. This is an update
on the figures
as at September 2008.
 |
The categories are broad - those who describe themselves as
workers or who are in education account for over half the subscribers. These
proportions have been constant over the years. |
|

|
This is how the subscribers categorise their writing status.
The number of non-writers subscribing is slowly declining and the number who
see themselves as full-time writers is steadily increasing. |

The analysis
of 2450 subscribers until November 2007
Many thanks for your continued interest. The intermittent emails
are much appreciated. |
On average eight people are joining the newsletter each
week. The crude demographic we use shows little change over the 8 years that
we have used these rather random categories. Education and publishing have
shrunk a little and the retired group and those not specifying anything have
grown marginally.
We are very proud of the number of long-term subscribers.
Every week we gain some and lose some. The highest loss rate is always
among those who have recently joined. A few cancel each year but we lose
most because their email goes dead. |
The information analysed was from the 3,010 subscribers who disclosed information.
We lose about 30% of the newsletter subscribers each year.
Because.....
We carry out regular culls of the subscribers
 | If your server reports you don't exist or the email is defunct |
 | If your security system blocks the newsletter for 2 weeks - and a lot of
businesses do block emails |
then you will lose your subscription.
If this happens please sign up again.
