Young Edward is called to the attic by his Granddad. In
an old leather chest, Granddad has found his old Sunday suit and a black
and white picture of a clown. The photo is of Granddad from when he was
in the circus. Together they lay out the the clown outfit on the floor.
Ed daydreams of winning at different sports by wearing
the huge over-sized clown shoes.
Granddad puts the photo back in an old album that has pictures of the
other circus acts that he used to perform with. For each picture,
Granddad tells Ed a story.
There are the circus clowns, Frankie Flea, Harry the Hat, Laughing Larry
and Tommy Trout, who performed with the midget clowns.
Jack 'Tiny' Jones , 'The World's Strongest Man'. Jack
has to develop new feats of strength to wow the crowds or he'll get
fired.
Max the Lion Tamer and Fluffy the Lion. When Max forgets to feed Fluffy
one day, the lion chomps down on Max's head during the acts finale.
The Great Barrelli, Human Cannonball. Barrelli's
assistant, Gunpowder Paul, quits the circus and Barrelli hires Paul's
brother, Firecracker Fred. Fred, however, used to work in demolition and
is only used to working with massive amounts of gunpowder.
When Granddad is tired, and has finished telling the stories, it's Ed's
bed time.
Ed wears Granddads clown shoes to bed but his dad tells
him to take them off. Dad closes Ed's bedroom door and thinks that's the
end of any silly clown nonsense.
Ed folds down the blanket to reveal Granddad's spinning bow tie whizzing
round and around.
