Grants to writers whose publisher's advance is
insufficient to cover the costs of research
involved. Application by letter to The Authors'
Foundation giving details, in confidence, of the
advance and royalties, together with the reasons
for needing additional funding. Grants are
sometimes given even if there is no commitment by
a publisher, so long as the applicant has had a
book published and the new work will almost
certainly be published. About £80,000 is
distributed each year. Contact the Society of
